Beteendeförändring, Swedish for behavior change, refers to the process of altering an individual's actions, habits, or patterns. This can occur naturally over time or be the result of deliberate interventions. Understanding and facilitating behavior change is a key focus in various fields, including psychology, public health, education, and marketing.

The process of behavior change often involves several stages. These may include pre-contemplation, where an individual is unaware of or unwilling to change a behavior; contemplation, where they begin to consider change; preparation, where they plan to change; action, where they actively modify their behavior; and maintenance, where they sustain the new behavior over time. Relapse, or a return to the old behavior, is also a common part of the process.

Various theories and models explain how behavior change happens. For instance, the Health Belief Model suggests that people are more likely to change their behavior if they perceive a threat to their health and believe that a recommended action will effectively reduce that threat. Social cognitive theory emphasizes the role of self-efficacy, observational learning, and reciprocal determinism in shaping behavior.

Interventions aimed at promoting behavior change can take many forms. These include educational programs, counseling, motivational interviewing, policy changes, environmental modifications, and the use of incentives or disincentives. The effectiveness of these interventions often depends on tailoring them to the specific behavior, the individual or group, and the context. Successfully facilitating behavior change requires a deep understanding of the underlying psychological and social factors that influence actions.
