Betaintegrateds are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a quaternary ammonium group and a carboxylate group within the same molecule, often separated by a methylene bridge. This internal salt structure, where a positively charged nitrogen atom is adjacent to a negatively charged oxygen atom, gives betaintegrateds their zwitterionic nature. This means they possess both positive and negative charges within the molecule, resulting in a net neutral charge.

The simplest and most well-known example of a betaintegrated is glycine betaine, commonly known as trimethylglycine or simply betaine. This compound is naturally occurring and found in various plants, particularly sugar beets, hence its name.
