Besegrar is an obscure verb that appears in only a handful of historical Spanish-language texts. It is not included in standard modern Spanish dictionaries, and its precise sense remains uncertain due to scarce attestations and fragmentary contexts. As a result, it is generally treated in philological discussions as an archaism or a probable scribal or regional variant rather than a living, productive word.

Etymology and form are not securely established. The form resembles a prefixed be- construction attached to a root that is not reliably attested in other words, which has led scholars to propose several possibilities: it could be a misspelling, a regional loanword, or a neologism from the early modern period. Some comparisons have been drawn to verbs such as segar or segregar, but there is no consensus linking besegrar conclusively to any of these roots. The lack of consistent usage across texts further complicates an etymological reconstruction.

Usage and meaning are likewise unclear. In the extant passages, the verb does not appear with a stable gloss, and editors of medieval and early modern corpora often flag it as uncertain or context-dependent.
