Benzhydrols are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a diphenylmethanol functional group. This structure consists of a central carbon atom bonded to two phenyl rings, a hydroxyl group (OH), and a hydrogen atom. The general formula for benzhydrols can be represented as (C6H5)2CHOH. They are considered secondary alcohols.

The parent compound of this class is benzhydrol itself, also known as diphenylmethanol. Substituted benzhydrols exist where one or both phenyl rings bear various substituents, altering their chemical and physical properties. For instance, certain antihistamines and hypnotics are derived from benzhydrol structures. Their reactivity stems from the hydroxyl group, which can undergo various reactions such as oxidation, esterification, and etherification.
