The process of becoming a potential bone marrow donor involves registering with a national or international registry. Potential donors usually undergo a health screening and provide a sample, often a cheek swab, for HLA typing. If a registered donor is found to be a match for a patient, they will be contacted by the registry. The donation itself can occur through two main methods. Bone marrow donation involves collecting stem cells from the donor's pelvic bone under anesthesia. Peripheral blood stem cell donation is a less invasive process where the donor receives medication to stimulate stem cell production, followed by a blood draw through an IV line, similar to a blood donation. Umbilical cord blood donation occurs at the time of childbirth, where the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta is collected.
