The bathythermograph, often abbreviated as BT, is an instrument used to measure the temperature of ocean water at various depths. It is a valuable tool for oceanographers and meteorologists, providing data crucial for understanding ocean currents, heat distribution, and their impact on weather patterns.

A typical bathythermograph consists of a temperature sensor, a recording mechanism, and a weight. When lowered into the water, the weight pulls the instrument down. As it descends, the temperature sensor records the water temperature at each depth. The recording mechanism, which can be mechanical or electronic, stores this information. Historically, mechanical BTs used a stylus that traced a temperature-depth curve onto a coated glass slide. Modern electronic bathythermographs store digital data.

Once the bathythermograph reaches its maximum depth or is brought back to the surface, the recorded data can be retrieved. This data reveals the thermal structure of the water column, including temperature inversions and thermoclines, which are layers where the temperature changes rapidly. This information helps in studying phenomena like El Niño, predicting marine conditions, and understanding the thermal capacity of the oceans.
