Bass management is the process of routing and filtering low-frequency content in an audio playback system so that bass is produced by appropriate loudspeakers, typically subwoofers, rather than by all speakers in a system. It is a key element in how modern multichannel and home-theater setups reproduce low-end information.

In consumer multichannel systems such as 5.1 or 7.1 configurations, bass management typically uses a crossover to split the signal: high-pass filtered to the main speakers and low-pass filtered to subwoofers. The crossover frequency and slope determine which bass content goes to which driver. The LFE (low-frequency effects) channel, present in formats like Dolby Digital and DTS, is routed to the subwoofer, usually with independent level control, and can be redirected or rebalanced depending on the setup.

In two-channel systems, bass management may be offered as an option to send bass to a connected subwoofer. When enabled, the mains receive a high-pass signal while the sub handles the low end. Incorrect settings can cause uneven bass response, gaps or overemphasis, so proper calibration is important.

In professional audio and studio monitoring, bass management ensures consistent low-frequency playback across multiple monitors. The process involves deliberate routing and filtering of sub-low content, with attention to crossover frequency, slope, phase, and level. Calibration tools and room measurements are often used to optimize integration between subs and main speakers for accurate monitoring and listening.
