Basisinzicht is a Dutch education term that refers to the ability to understand and apply the fundamental principles and relationships that underlie a domain, most commonly mathematics. It involves knowing why methods work as well as how to perform them, which supports flexible problem solving and transfer to unfamiliar tasks rather than mere procedural recall.

In curricula, basisinzicht aims to balance conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and strategic competence. Learners develop mental models and representations—such as number lines and part–whole decompositions—and practice tasks that connect concepts to procedures. Examples include recognizing that 7 + 5 = 5 + 7, or decomposing 37 into 30 and 7 to simplify calculations.

Implementation relies on guided instruction, explorations, and formative assessment. Teachers introduce ideas through concrete models, discuss underlying principles, and provide tasks with multiple entry points and explainable solutions. Assessment focuses on explaining reasoning, selecting suitable strategies, and applying insights in new contexts.

Critically, basisinzicht is not a substitute for skillful practice but a framework for durable understanding and transfer. Challenges include aligning with curricula, ensuring teacher development, and avoiding overemphasis on one aspect at the expense of others.
