Baseboll is a bat‑and‑ball team sport that originated in the United States in the early 19th century and has spread worldwide. The game is played on a diamond‑shaped field with four bases: first, second, third, and home plate. Two teams of nine players each take turns playing offense, attempting to score runs by hitting a pitched ball and advancing around the bases, and defense, attempting to retire offensive players through a combination of pitching, catching, and fielding.

Pitchers deliver the ball to the batter from a mound placed 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate. Batters try to hit the ball into fair territory, after which fielders attempt to record outs by catching batted balls in the air or by throwing the ball to a base before the runner arrives. An umpire presides over the game, calling balls and strikes, determining fair and foul balls, and maintaining the official score. A standard game consists of nine innings, with the team having the higher score at the completion of the final inning declared the winner.

Baseboll is governed internationally by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, while major professional leagues include Major League Baseball in North America, Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, the Korean Baseball Organization, and the Cuban National Series. The sport has a global following and is featured in events such as the World Baseball Classic and, historically, the Olympic Games.
