baqueta

Baqueta is a drumstick, a baton used to strike percussion instruments. The term is used in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking contexts to refer to the tool employed by drummers and percussionists, most often for snare drums, drum kits, and cajóns. The plural is baquetas.

Construction and materials: Most baquetas are wooden; hickory is a common choice in North American manufacturing for its resilience and feel, while maple and birch are popular alternatives. Some sticks incorporate metal or composite cores for durability or altered balance. The tip can be wood (oval, round, teardrop) or nylon; nylon tips produce a brighter cymbal tone and wear longer, especially on hard surfaces.

Sizes and types: Baquetas vary in length and thickness. A typical stick is around 16 inches (40 cm) long, with diameters from about 0.52 to 0.63 inches (13 to 16 mm). Jazz sticks tend to be thinner and lighter; rock sticks heavier for more volume. There are also specialty baquetas for cajón, as well as marching and concert sticks.

Care and selection: The choice depends on playing style and personal preference. Beginners often start with lighter sticks (roughly 5A). Tip wear is common; replace sticks when cracked or splintered. Proper storage in a dry place helps prevent warping, and rotating sticks can prolong life.
