Ballasti is the plural form of ballast in Italian and appears in technical contexts to refer to materials or systems used to provide weight for stability and trim in vessels, structures, and vehicles. In English-language usage, ballast is the common term, with ballasti appearing primarily in Italian texts or multilingual documentation.

Solid ballast materials include crushed stone, concrete blocks, and dense metals placed in dedicated compartments or ballast tanks to achieve a desired weight distribution. Ballast can be permanent or adjustable, and its arrangement is chosen to position the center of gravity and improve stability under varying loads and motions. Ballast water refers to water carried in dedicated tanks to regulate buoyancy; it is pumped in or discharged during operations to maintain trim and stability. Ballast tanks enable ships and submarines to submerge, surface, or stabilize at different depths.

Railway ballast is a related but distinct use: an aggregate bed beneath tracks that provides load distribution, drainage, and track stability. Typical materials are angular crushed stone within specified size ranges; ballast is compacted and periodically renewed to maintain geometric integrity and drainage performance.

Environmental and regulatory aspects are prominent for ballast water. The transfer of aquatic organisms through ballast water can introduce invasive species, so international and national regulations govern treatment and exchange practices. The International Maritime Organization’s Ballast Water Management Convention and national implementations require ballast water management plans, treatment systems, or operational measures. For railways, ballast maintenance involves fouling control, drainage management, and regrading to preserve track geometry and safety.
