Balancete is an accounting document that lists the balances of all general ledger accounts at a specific date, showing the amounts in the debit and credit columns. It serves mainly as an internal control instrument to verify the arithmetic accuracy of the books and to facilitate the closing process and subsequent reporting. It is typically prepared at regular dates, such as monthly or quarterly, and can also be produced at year-end.

The balancete is composed of the accounts from the general ledger. Each account displays its current balance, with assets and expenses usually appearing as debit balances and liabilities, equity, and revenues as credit balances. The sum of the debit balances should equal the sum of the credit balances; a discrepancy signals posting errors, omissions, or arithmetic mistakes that require investigation.

A balancete differs from formal financial statements. While it provides a snapshot of balances for internal control and decision-making, the balanço patrimonial (balance sheet) and a demonstração do resultado (income statement) present structured, external-facing information and often involve adjustments, classifications, and notes that go beyond what a basic balancete shows.

In practice, the balancete is used to detect inconsistencies, guide closing entries, and prepare the organization for generating official statements. It is a common tool in accounting systems in Portuguese-speaking countries as part of routine bookkeeping and financial management, and it may also be referred to as balancete de verificação in some contexts.
