Bakteeritiöistä, known in English as bacterial spores, are dormant, non-reproductive structures produced by some bacteria. These tough, resistant cells are a survival mechanism, enabling bacteria to withstand harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, radiation, dehydration, and chemical disinfectants that would normally kill active vegetative cells. The process of forming a spore is called sporulation, and when conditions become favorable again, the spore can germinate back into a metabolically active cell.

The most well-known bacterial spores are those produced by the genera Bacillus and Clostridium. For example, Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium that causes anthrax, forms highly resistant spores that can persist in the environment for extended periods. Similarly, Clostridium tetani, responsible for tetanus, produces spores that are commonly found in soil and dust.

The resistance of bacterial spores is attributed to several factors, including a tough outer coat, a dehydrated core with low water content, and the presence of small acid-soluble proteins (SASPs) that protect the DNA. These characteristics make spores incredibly difficult to eliminate and pose significant challenges in sterilization and disinfection processes, particularly in medical and food industries. Understanding the formation, resistance, and germination of bacterial spores is crucial for controlling infectious diseases and ensuring product safety.
