Bakteeritiöistä, known in English as bacterial spores, are dormant, non-reproductive structures produced by some bacteria. These tough, resistant cells are a survival mechanism, enabling bacteria to withstand harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, radiation, dehydration, and chemical disinfectants that would normally kill active vegetative cells. The process of forming a spore is called sporulation, and when conditions become favorable again, the spore can germinate back into a metabolically active cell.
