Avgas ventilation refers to the engineering controls, procedures, and practices used to manage vapors associated with aviation gasoline (avgas) in facilities where avgas is stored, handled, or dispensed. The goal is to minimize worker exposure to vapors, prevent vapor accumulation, and reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

The concept applies to airports, aviation maintenance facilities, fuel farms, and fueling operations on ramps and t bays. It covers storage tanks, fueling points, piping, hoses, and related equipment, as well as the surrounding work areas where vapors may disperse.

Vapors from avgas can pose health and safety hazards and may form flammable mixtures in confined spaces or low-lying areas. Prolonged inhalation can affect health, while vapor buildup increases fire and explosion risk, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Avgas frequently contains lead and other additives, underscoring the importance of containment and exposure controls.

Ventilation approaches include the use of local exhaust ventilation at dispensing points, general or mechanical ventilation for storage and maintenance areas, and, where feasible, vapor recovery systems to capture vapors at the source. Ventilation should be designed to dilute vapors to levels below occupational exposure limits and the lower explosive limit, and to direct vapors away from occupants and ignition sources. Regular monitoring with gas detectors and vapour sensors, proper bonding and grounding to prevent static discharge, and strict adherence to fueling procedures are essential components.

Regulatory and standards frameworks typically include national or regional fire codes, occupational safety regulations, and industry guidelines for aviation fueling operations. Key elements are ventilation performance requirements, vapor control during fueling, and fire protection measures appropriate to the facility’s design and risk profile.
