Autowegen is a term used in Dutch-speaking regions to describe a class of roads designed primarily for automobile traffic. They form part of national road networks and serve as fast connectors between towns and regions. The precise standards and speed limits attached to autowegen vary by country and historical period, but they are generally faster and subject to stricter access controls than ordinary urban or rural streets, though not always to the level of a full motorway.

Historically, autowegen were built to improve long-distance car travel before motorways were widely established. In many countries, they were upgraded or replaced by motorways (snelwegen) as road networks modernized, while some segments retained the label autoweg or were reclassified. Characteristics commonly associated with autowegen include higher speed limits compared with urban streets and multiple lanes in major segments, with access points that are more limited than on local roads. However, in several regions some autowegen include at-grade intersections, traffic signals, or direct property access, which distinguishes them from full motorways.

The terminology and classification differ between countries and municipalities. In Dutch usage, autoweg describes a road type below or outside a fully controlled-access motorway, whereas elsewhere the term may be linked to expressways or large rural roads. Road authorities determine maintenance, signage, and speed rules in line with national transport policy. Safety considerations, such as crash barriers, signage standards, and speed enforcement, are central to autowegen management.
