Origin and usage: The concept traces to the Latin auctoritas, meaning influence, prestige, or authorization. In many languages related terms exist; for example, in Catalan the word is autoritat.

Types and sources: Social authority can be traditional (based on established customs), charismatic (derived from a leader’s personal qualities), or legal-rational (grounded in formal rules and offices), a framework associated with Max Weber. In addition, epistemic authority refers to justified confidence in experts and knowledge claims within a field.
