Automaattivaihteisia, or automatic transmissions, are a type of gearbox that can change gear ratios as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from needing to shift gears manually. This is achieved through a complex system of hydraulics, gears, and electronic controls.

The most common type of automatic transmission is the torque converter automatic. This system uses a torque converter, a fluid coupling, to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. Inside the torque converter, a fluid is spun by a turbine connected to the engine, which in turn spins a stator and another turbine connected to the transmission. This fluid coupling allows for smooth engagement and disengagement of power, as well as the ability to hold the vehicle stationary on a hill without stalling the engine.

Other types of automatic transmissions exist, including continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs). CVTs use a belt or chain and variable-diameter pulleys to provide an infinite range of gear ratios, offering very smooth acceleration. DCTs, on the other hand, use two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets, allowing for very rapid and efficient gear changes, often found in performance vehicles.

The primary benefit of an automaattivaihteisto is driver convenience, especially in stop-and-go traffic. They also contribute to a more relaxed driving experience. While historically less fuel-efficient than manual transmissions, modern automatic transmissions have significantly closed this gap, and in some cases, even surpass manual transmissions in terms of fuel economy due to their advanced control systems and optimized gear ratios. They are a standard feature in many modern vehicles across various segments.
