Autograft-based refers to medical procedures and therapies that use tissue harvested from the same individual (an autograft) to repair or reconstruct damaged tissue. The graft material is obtained from the patient’s own body and transplanted to the target site, eliminating cross-species transmission risk and immune rejection. This approach is contrasted with allograft-based grafts from another person and xenografts from a different species.

Common applications include bone grafting in orthopedics and spinal fusion, treatment of fractures and nonunions, and reconstruction in maxillofacial surgery. Autografts are also used for soft tissue and nerve grafts, where applicable, and in dental procedures requiring grafting to support implants.

Autografts provide osteogenic cells, native growth factors, and a natural scaffold, delivering osteogenesis, osteoconduction, and osteoinduction. They usually integrate rapidly and carry minimal risk of immune reaction or disease transmission, but harvesting creates a donor site and may cause pain or complications. The amount of available graft material is also limited.

In practice, autograft-based strategies are often considered the gold standard for certain bone-reconstruction indications, yet clinicians may combine autografts with allografts or synthetic substitutes to balance biological benefits with graft availability and morbidity considerations. Ongoing research seeks to optimize harvesting techniques, expand graft options, and enhance regenerative outcomes with adjunctive therapies.
