Austeniititud refers to a heat treatment process applied to certain steels, primarily those with a significant iron and carbon content. The core of this process involves heating the steel to a specific temperature range, known as the austenitizing temperature. This temperature is above the critical point at which the steel's crystal structure transforms into austenite. Austenite is a face-centered cubic (FCC) allotrope of iron, distinct from the body-centered cubic (BCC) structure of ferrite. During this heating phase, carbon atoms dissolve into the iron lattice, forming a solid solution.

Following the heating to the austenitizing temperature, the steel is then typically held at this temperature for a period to allow for complete transformation and homogenization. The subsequent step in the heat treatment can vary. In some cases, the steel is slowly cooled to achieve a specific microstructure and mechanical properties, such as improved ductility. In other applications, the steel is rapidly quenched (cooled very quickly) from the austenitizing temperature. This rapid cooling prevents the carbon from precipitating out as carbides and instead traps it within the austenite structure, leading to the formation of martensite upon further cooling, a much harder and more brittle phase. The term "austeniititud" specifically describes the state of the steel after it has been heated to form austenite, regardless of the subsequent cooling treatment. This state is a precursor to various hardening and toughening processes.
