Audiopathies is a broad term encompassing any disorder or disease affecting the auditory system. This can include conditions that impair hearing, cause pain, or lead to other auditory sensations such as tinnitus. The auditory system is complex, involving the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear, and the neural pathways that transmit sound information to the brain. Damage or dysfunction at any of these stages can result in an audiopathy.

Common causes of audiopathies are diverse. They can be congenital, meaning present from birth, or acquired later in life. Acquired causes include exposure to loud noise, which can damage the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, leading to noise-induced hearing loss. Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of an external source, is another frequent complaint. Dizziness or vertigo, often associated with inner ear disorders, can also be a symptom. Pain in the ear, a feeling of fullness, or difficulty understanding speech are additional manifestations. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination of the ear, and various audiological tests such as audiometry and tympanometry. Treatment strategies depend heavily on the underlying cause and may include hearing aids, cochlear implants, medication, surgery, or lifestyle modifications.
