Audience participation, also called participatory performance, refers to the involvement of audience members in a performance or event in ways that go beyond passive watching. It can influence the content, pacing, outcomes, or interpretation of the work.

Forms and techniques include direct address by performers; call-and-response; audience voting or decision-making; audience-led improvisation; participatory installations; forums and workshops; and engagement through social media. These elements encourage attendees to become co-creators or active witnesses rather than sole observers.

Contexts and settings span theatre (notably interactive or participatory theatre), live events, education (participatory learning), museums and interactive exhibits, and religious or civic gatherings. Digital platforms enable real-time participation through live polls, chat, or shared media, expanding reach and immediacy beyond the physical venue.

Benefits and challenges accompany audience participation. Benefits commonly cited include higher engagement, accessibility, inclusion, and memorability, along with opportunities for community-building. Challenges include potential disruption, safety concerns, unequal power dynamics, consent and comfort issues, and the risk of excluding quieter participants. Effective participation often requires skilled moderation, clear boundaries, and consideration of diverse audience needs.

Historical and theoretical notes place participatory practices in both ancient and modern contexts. Modern frameworks include Augusto Boal’s Forum Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed, which emphasize audience members as active participants or “spect-actors.” Contemporary practice spans theatre, performance art, education, and social practice, adapting participation to various artistic and civic purposes.
