Atomórákban refers to "atomic clocks" in Hungarian. Atomic clocks are a type of clock that uses the resonant frequency of atoms as its timekeeping element. They are the most accurate timekeeping devices known.

The operation of an atomic clock is based on the principle of atomic resonance. Atoms, when subjected to electromagnetic radiation of a specific frequency, absorb or emit energy. This resonant frequency is extremely stable and consistent for a given element. Atomic clocks typically utilize the transition between two energy levels in atoms, such as cesium-133 or rubidium. The clock's electronic circuitry monitors these transitions and uses them to regulate a timekeeping oscillator, ensuring exceptional accuracy.

The first experimental atomic clock was developed in 1949. Since then, atomic clocks have become indispensable in various scientific and technological fields. They are crucial for global positioning systems (GPS), telecommunications networks, scientific research requiring precise time measurements, and fundamental physics experiments. The accuracy of atomic clocks has advanced significantly over the decades, with modern cesium fountains achieving uncertainties of less than one second over the age of the universe.
