Atomernes is the genitive plural form in Danish of atomerne, meaning “of the atoms.” In science, atoms are the fundamental constituents of matter, defined as the smallest units of an element that retain its properties. An atom consists of a dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by an electron cloud held in place by the electromagnetic attraction between negatively charged electrons and positively charged protons.
