"Atenuate" is frequently encountered as a misspelling of the standard English verb "attenuate." Attenuate means to reduce the force, intensity, amplitude, or severity of something. In physics and engineering, attenuation describes the reduction of signal strength or wave amplitude as it propagates through a medium.
