Atelectasis is a medical condition characterized by the collapse or incomplete expansion of a lung or part of a lung. This can affect a single lobe, a segment of a lobe, or the entire lung. When atelectasis occurs, the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs responsible for gas exchange, become deflated. This reduces the surface area available for oxygen to enter the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to be removed.

The causes of atelectasis are varied. It can be obstructive, meaning something is blocking the airway, such as a mucus plug, a tumor, or a foreign object. Non-obstructive causes include compression of the lung from outside, like a large pleural effusion (fluid in the space between the lung and chest wall) or a pneumothorax (air in that same space). Other factors contributing to atelectasis can be related to decreased breathing effort, such as after surgery or in cases of prolonged immobility, or due to surfactant deficiency, which is a substance that helps keep alveoli open, especially in premature infants.

Symptoms of atelectasis can range from mild to severe depending on the extent of lung involvement and the underlying cause. Mild cases may be asymptomatic or present with subtle signs. More significant atelectasis can lead to shortness of breath, rapid and shallow breathing, chest pain, and a cough. In severe instances, it can cause a drop in blood oxygen levels, leading to confusion or cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin).

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, listening to the lungs with a stethoscope, and imaging studies such as a chest X-ray or CT scan. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and re-expanding the collapsed lung tissue. This might involve deep breathing exercises, airway clearance techniques, or, in cases of obstruction, bronchoscopy to remove the blockage. In some situations, mechanical ventilation may be necessary to support breathing.
