Astumista is a Finnish term that refers to the act of stepping or the process of stepping with the foot. In everyday language it describes placing one foot in front of the other, as in walking, dancing, or other forms of locomotion. In movement sciences and biomechanics the concept is used to discuss the gait cycle, the coordinated sequence of motions that enables forward progression.

The gait cycle begins with initial contact when the foot first touches the ground, followed by loading response as body weight shifts onto that leg. Midstance marks the body's weight over the stance leg, and terminal stance prepares for propulsion. Preswing, initial swing, midswing, and terminal swing describe the successive movements of the leg and foot as it clears the ground and prepares for the next step. The cycle repeats with each step and varies with speed, terrain, and individual characteristics.
