Most commonly associated with Western astrology, the practice also appears in various forms in other cultures, including Hindu/Vedic (Jyotisha) and Chinese astrology.

Historically, astrology emerged in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, matured in Hellenistic Greece, and spread through the Roman world and medieval Islamic scholarship into Europe. It has evolved into multiple schools, including natal (birth chart) astrology, predictive methods, horary astrology, and electional astrology.

Practitioners interpret birth charts by mapping planetary positions onto an astrological chart divided into houses, signs, and aspects. They consider planetary rulerships, transits, progressions, and returns to draw meaning about personality traits, life patterns, and opportunities.

Astrology remains popular in popular culture and daily horoscopes but is not supported by current scientific evidence. Critics argue that subjective interpretation and cognitive biases account for perceived accuracy, and that astrology lacks testable mechanisms. Proponents counter that astrology provides a symbolic language and guidance rather than verifiable predictions.
