Assembly language, often shortened to assemblykielellä in Finnish, is a low-level programming language. It is considered one level above machine code and consists of mnemonic codes that represent machine code instructions. Each assembly language is specific to a particular computer architecture.

Unlike high-level programming languages such as Python or Java, assembly language provides a direct mapping to the computer's instruction set. This means that a single assembly instruction often corresponds to a single machine instruction. Programmers using assembly language have a great deal of control over the hardware, including memory management and processor registers.

The primary advantage of assembly language is its efficiency. Programs written in assembly can be very fast and occupy minimal memory, as there is no overhead from a compiler or interpreter. This makes it suitable for performance-critical applications, embedded systems, device drivers, and operating system kernels.

However, assembly language is significantly more difficult to write, read, and debug than high-level languages. Programs are longer and more complex, and understanding the underlying hardware architecture is essential. The lack of portability is another drawback; an assembly program written for one processor will not run on another without significant modification. Consequently, it is rarely used for general-purpose application development today.
