Treatment focuses on eradicating any infection, supporting breathing, and preventing further aspiration. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections. In cases of severe respiratory distress, oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation may be necessary. Management also includes addressing the underlying cause of the aspiration, such as adjusting feeding methods or managing gastroesophageal reflux disease. Prevention strategies are crucial and include elevating the head of the bed during and after meals, using thickened liquids if recommended, and ensuring proper oral hygiene.
