Aspirativen, commonly referred to in English as aspiratives, are a class of verbal forms used in some languages to encode the speaker’s aspiration toward the action described by the verb. The term appears in linguistic descriptions as a grammatical category, often called the aspirative mood or aspirative aspect. The defining feature is a speaker-centered stance toward the event, typically related to desire, intention, or readiness rather than purely temporal or evidential meaning.

Semantics and function can vary by language, but aspirativen commonly express volition, intention, or a sense that the speaker is about to perform the action. In some systems they may signal imminent action or a commitment to act, while in others they interact with tense, aspect, or mood in more complex ways. They are distinct from optative (wish) forms and from plain future or imperative forms, though overlaps with these categories occur cross-linguistically.

Morphology and realization are diverse. Aspirativen may be marked by suffixes, prefixes, particles, or auxiliary constructions, and they can attach to the main verb or to auxiliary verbs. The marking can be purely lexical, or it may co-occur with other grammatical layers such as tense, aspect, mood, or evidentiality. In many languages the aspirative system is language-specific and limited to particular verb classes or contexts.

Cross-linguistic distribution shows that aspirativen appear in a range of languages across different families, but they are not universal. They are typically described as a typological feature rather than a universal mood, with varying grammatical realizations and semantic scope.
