Asphericity is a term used in geometry, topology, and applied sciences to describe the degree to which an object deviates from a perfect sphere or circle. In geometry and materials science, asphericity is quantified by several related measures. A common one is the isoperimetric ratio S^3/(36πV^2), where S is surface area and V is volume; spheres achieve the minimum value of 1, and any other shape yields a larger value. Another measure is the ratio of the circumradius to the inradius (R/r); a sphere has R/r = 1, with larger values indicating increasing deviation. Root-mean-square deviations from the best-fit sphere are also used, particularly for irregular particles or biological cells.

In topology and differential geometry, asphericity has a distinct meaning. A topological space X is aspherical if all higher homotopy groups vanish: π_n(X) = 0 for every n ≥ 2. Equivalently, its universal cover is contractible. This property separates spaces with trivial higher-dimensional holes from spheres, which have nontrivial π_2. Classic aspherical spaces include tori and many manifolds with non-positive curvature, while the sphere S^n (n ≥ 2) is not aspherical.

Applications of asphericity span science and engineering. The concept helps in describing particle packing, diffusion, and flow; in radiotherapy planning, tumor or organ asphericity can influence dose distribution; in computer graphics, measures of asphericity inform shape modeling. Despite different definitions, the core idea remains the same: how far a given object or space is from being a perfect sphere.
