Askelkyykkyjä, often translated as lunges, is a fundamental exercise targeting the lower body, particularly the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. It involves stepping forward with one leg and lowering the hips until both knees are bent at approximately a 90-degree angle. The front knee should remain aligned over the ankle, and the back knee should hover just above the floor. This movement requires balance and coordination.

There are various forms of askelkyykkyjä. The forward lunge is the most common, but variations include reverse lunges, lateral lunges, and walking lunges. Reverse lunges, where the step is taken backward, can be easier on the knees for some individuals. Lateral lunges engage the inner and outer thigh muscles more directly.
