Aseptisesta is the Finnish adjective meaning aseptic or aseptically, used to describe procedures, environments, or materials that are free from contamination by microorganisms. The term derives from a privative prefix and the concept of infection, and is cognate with the English word asepsis.

In medicine and surgery, aseptic technique includes measures such as meticulous hand hygiene, sterile gloves, sterile instruments, and a sterile work field, along with environmental controls to prevent contamination. Sterilization methods, including autoclaving, dry heat, and chemical sterilants, are used for instruments and materials; disinfection is applied for noncritical items. In laboratories and pharmaceutical manufacturing, asepsis is maintained through controlled environments (such as cleanrooms and laminar flow workbenches), validated sterilization processes, and strict handling and documentation protocols.

Asepsis is distinct from antisepsis, which aims to reduce or inhibit microorganisms on living tissue rather than achieve complete sterility. Sterile means totally free of viable microorganisms, whereas antiseptic agents reduce microbial load on living tissue to safe levels without guaranteeing sterility.

Aseptic practices are essential for reducing surgical-site infections, ensuring the safety of injections and implants, and maintaining sterile products in healthcare and industry. International guidelines and standards, including those from the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control, as well as ISO 14644 and related AAMI standards, guide training, validation, and quality control to maintain asepsis across settings.
