arvväärtused

Arvväärtused is a term used in Estonian to denote the principles and beliefs that individuals or communities regard as important and worthy of guiding behavior. Broadly, it refers to values that shape judgments about what is good, desirable, fair, or worthwhile. The concept covers both ethical or cultural values and, in a mathematical or technical context, numerical values of expressions or variables.

In cultural and social contexts, arvväärtused are the standards by which people live and interact. They are influenced by family, education, religion, language, history, and institutions, and they can vary across cultures and change over time. When different groups prioritize incompatible principles, value conflicts can arise, requiring dialogue, negotiation, or policy decisions to achieve common ground.

In education and public life, arvväärtused are taught and reinforced through family socialization, school curricula, civic education, media, and organizational codes of conduct. They underpin commitments to human rights, equality, freedom, justice, responsibility, solidarity, and environmental stewardship, among others. In mathematics and computing, arvväärtused can also refer to numerical values assigned to expressions, functions, or variables—i.e., the value of an expression for a given input. This mathematical sense is distinct from the ethical or cultural usage but shares the common idea of a defined, determinate value.
