Arvoväliä is a Finnish term that translates to "value interval" or "confidence interval" in English. It is a concept used in statistics to express the uncertainty associated with an estimate of a population parameter, such as the mean or proportion. Instead of providing a single point estimate, an arvoväliä gives a range of values within which the true population parameter is likely to lie with a certain level of confidence.

The width of an arvoväliä is influenced by two main factors: the sample size and the desired confidence level. A larger sample size generally leads to a narrower interval, indicating a more precise estimate. A higher confidence level, such as 95% or 99%, requires a wider interval to ensure a greater probability that the true parameter is captured.

Arvoväliä are calculated using statistical formulas that incorporate the sample data and a critical value from a probability distribution. For example, a common arvoväliä for a population mean is calculated as the sample mean plus or minus a margin of error, which is determined by the sample standard deviation, sample size, and the chosen confidence level.

The interpretation of an arvoväliä is crucial. A 95% arvoväliä means that if we were to repeatedly take samples and calculate an arvoväliä for each sample, approximately 95% of these intervals would contain the true population parameter. It does not mean there is a 95% probability that the true parameter lies within any single calculated interval.
