Articulationphonological is an interdisciplinary field that studies how the physical production of speech (articulation) interacts with the linguistic organization of sound (phonology). It aims to explain how articulatory mechanisms shape phonological patterns and, in turn, how phonological structure constrains articulation.

Rooted in articulatory phonology, the field treats articulatory gestures—the dynamic constrictions and releases of speech organs—as the basic units of both phonetics and phonology. In this view, phonological representations are realized through the timing and coordination of gestures across articulators, rather than through abstract, discrete symbols alone. Phonological processes are thus expressed as systematic gestures interactions, such as coarticulation and gestural overlap, within and across syllables and words.

Key concepts include coarticulation, where the articulatory configuration for one segment overlaps with others; gestural timing and overlap, which determine tempo, rhythm, and segmental realization; and the idea that phonological inventories emerge from constrained gesture geometries and their possible combinations. The framework often emphasizes grounded representations, where phonological categories correspond to sets of articulatory targets and their spatial-temporal realizations.

Methodologically, articulationphonological draws on experimental techniques such as electromagnetic articulography, ultrasound imaging, MRI, palatography, and other kinematic and acoustic measures. Cross-linguistic data show how languages differ in gestural coordination and how coarticulatory patterns can influence perceived phonemic contrasts and phonotactics.

Applications include improvements in speech synthesis and recognition, language teaching, and clinical linguistics. The approach provides a coherent account of coarticulation, accent variation, and speech disorders by linking articulatory constraints to phonological structure, thereby bridging phonetics and phonology in a principled way.
