Arteriografia, also known as angiography, is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the arteries of the body. It involves the injection of a contrast dye into the bloodstream, which then flows through the arteries. X-rays are taken as the dye travels, allowing physicians to see the shape and condition of the blood vessels. This procedure can help diagnose a variety of vascular conditions, including blockages, narrowing (stenosis), aneurysms, and malformations.

The process typically begins with a small incision, often in the groin, to access a major artery, usually the femoral artery. A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is then guided through the artery to the area of interest under fluoroscopic (real-time X-ray) guidance. Once in position, the contrast dye is injected through the catheter. Images are captured by an X-ray machine, creating detailed pictures of the arteries. Arteriografia is a crucial diagnostic tool for conditions affecting the brain, heart, limbs, and other organs. It can also be used therapeutically, for example, to open blocked arteries with angioplasty or to deliver medication directly to a tumor. Potential risks include allergic reactions to the contrast dye, bleeding at the insertion site, and, rarely, damage to the blood vessel.
