Arpikudoksessa refers to scar tissue in Finnish. Scar tissue is a natural part of the healing process that replaces normal skin or other tissue after an injury. When the dermis, the deeper layer of skin, is damaged, the body forms collagen fibers to repair the wound. This fibrous tissue, known as scar tissue, is different from the surrounding tissue in terms of texture, color, and elasticity.

The formation of scar tissue is a complex biological process. Initially, the wound fills with a blood clot, which then transitions to granulation tissue. This tissue contains new blood vessels and fibroblasts, cells that produce collagen. As healing progresses, the granulation tissue is remodeled, and the collagen fibers are reorganized to form a more mature scar.

The appearance and feel of scar tissue can vary greatly depending on the depth and type of injury, as well as individual genetic factors and wound care. Some scars are flat, pale, and barely noticeable, while others can be raised, thick, and red. In some cases, excessive collagen production can lead to hypertrophic scars or keloids, which are raised scars that extend beyond the original wound boundaries. Scar tissue lacks the functional components of the original tissue, such as hair follicles and sweat glands, and may have reduced sensation.
