Armormaking is the craft of creating protective coverings for the body. Historically, this involved the fabrication of armor from materials such as leather, metal, or even bone. The earliest forms of armor were likely simple shields and rudimentary body coverings designed to deflect blows and projectiles. As warfare evolved, so did the sophistication of armormaking techniques.

Metal armor, particularly steel, became prevalent in many cultures. Smiths would meticulously shape metal plates, often using hammers and anvils, to conform to the human body. This process, known as forging, required immense skill and knowledge of metallurgy to ensure the armor was both strong enough to withstand attacks and light enough for the wearer to move effectively. Chainmail, consisting of interlocking metal rings, offered flexibility and a significant degree of protection against slashing weapons.

Different regions and time periods developed distinct styles of armor, influenced by local materials, available technology, and the specific threats faced. For example, samurai armor from Japan utilized lacquered plates and silk cords, while European plate armor evolved into intricate, full-body suits designed for heavy cavalry and infantry.

The development of firearms eventually rendered most traditional armormaking obsolete for military purposes. However, the craft persists in historical reenactment, artistic endeavors, and in the creation of specialized protective gear for certain professions. Modern body armor, while employing advanced materials like Kevlar and ceramics, draws upon the fundamental principles of deflecting or absorbing kinetic energy that guided armormaking for centuries.
