APPE stands for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience. It is the capstone experiential component of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs in the United States and other regions that follow ACPE standards. APPEs are designed to provide supervised, direct patient-care practice and to integrate clinical knowledge with professional skills needed for practice.

APPEs usually total about 1,440 to 1,600 hours over 9 to 12 months and consist of multiple rotations, typically lasting four to six weeks each. Rotations occur in diverse settings, including hospital inpatient (acute care) units, ambulatory care clinics, community pharmacies, specialty practice, managed care or mail-order environments, nuclear pharmacy, industry, or academia. Each rotation is supervised by a licensed pharmacist preceptor who sets learning objectives, provides feedback, and conducts formal assessments. Many programs also require a portfolio or reflective assignments and may include objective structured clinical examinations or other performance evaluations.

The aims of APPEs are to develop competencies in patient care, clinical decision-making, medication safety, and therapeutic management, as well as communication and collaboration with patients and interprofessional teams. They often incorporate entrustable professional activities (EPAs) to measure readiness for entry-level practice and licensure. APPE experiences are planned within the school’s experiential education framework, with sites affiliated to the program. While exact structures vary by school, APPEs represent the core experience that bridges didactic coursework and licensure requirements.
