Anyagtulajdonság refers to the observable and measurable characteristics of a material that determine its behavior under various conditions. These properties are crucial for selecting appropriate materials for specific applications. They can be broadly categorized into mechanical, physical, thermal, electrical, and chemical properties.

Mechanical properties describe how a material responds to applied forces. This includes strength, which is the ability to withstand stress before permanent deformation or fracture; stiffness, indicating resistance to elastic deformation; hardness, measuring resistance to scratching or indentation; and toughness, representing the material's ability to absorb energy before fracturing. Ductility and malleability describe a material's capacity to be deformed without fracturing, allowing it to be drawn into wires or hammered into thin sheets.

Physical properties are intrinsic characteristics that don't involve a chemical change. Examples include density, the mass per unit volume; color; luster; and state of matter (solid, liquid, gas).

Thermal properties relate to how a material reacts to heat. Key properties include thermal conductivity, the ability to transfer heat; specific heat capacity, the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a unit mass by one degree; and thermal expansion, the tendency to change volume in response to temperature changes.

Electrical properties concern a material's response to an electric field. Electrical conductivity describes how well a material conducts electric current, while electrical resistivity is its inverse. Dielectric strength refers to a material's ability to withstand an electric field without breaking down.

Chemical properties describe a material's behavior in chemical reactions. This includes reactivity, corrosion resistance, and flammability. Understanding anyagtulajdonság allows engineers and scientists to predict how a material will perform and to design products with desired characteristics.
