An antropometer is a device used to measure the linear dimensions of the human body. It is employed in physical anthropology, ergonomics, nutrition surveys, and clinical assessment to collect standardized measurements such as stature, limb lengths, and body breadths.

Traditional anthropometers consist of a rigid frame with a vertical scale and movable arms that contact the body at defined anatomical points. A common configuration uses a vertical ruler mounted on a fixed base, with sliding sliders or caliper-like arms to record distances between landmarks, such as height from crown to floor, shoulder width, and limb lengths. Some models also incorporate tapes or calipers for circumference and girth measurements. The apparatus is designed to produce repeatable, comparable measurements under standardized conditions.

Measurements are obtained using standardized procedures. The subject typically stands erect with shoes removed for height measurements, while other dimensions are measured with limbs and joints in prescribed positions. Measurement protocols emphasize consistent posture, reference points, and positions to minimize error, and have historically supported large-scale population studies as well as clinical assessments.

In contemporary practice, many laboratories use digital devices or three-dimensional body scanners that automate and speed data collection. Traditional anthropometers remain in use in field settings or where low-cost equipment is needed and are compatible with established protocols in kinanthropometry, such as ISAK standards, which guide the measurement of body dimensions for research and comparative analysis.
