This hobby, often referred to as ant keeping or myrmecology, involves providing ants with suitable living conditions, food, and water to observe their complex social behaviors and life cycles. Antkeepers range from casual enthusiasts interested in observing a few ants to serious hobbyists who manage multiple species and colonies.

The practice of ant keeping requires a basic understanding of ant biology and colony needs. Formicariums are designed to mimic natural ant habitats, often featuring a nesting area and an outworld for foraging. Different ant species have varying requirements for temperature, humidity, and substrate, which antkeepers must research and maintain. Common species kept by hobbyists include carpenter ants, pavement ants, and various species of *Lasius* and *Messor*.

Acquiring ants for a formicarium usually involves catching a newly mated queen during her nuptial flight, or purchasing a founding colony from a specialized dealer. The queen then lays her first eggs, and the colony grows over time. Antkeepers monitor the colony's progress, including the development of larvae, the emergence of workers, and the overall health of the colony. This hobby offers a unique opportunity to learn about insect social structures, colony dynamics, and ecological roles without disturbing wild populations. While generally considered a safe hobby, some species possess stings or bites, and proper handling is advised.
