Antitropes are narrative devices that subvert or invert common story tropes. Instead of following predictable plot progressions or character archetypes, antitropes deliberately play against audience expectations. This can manifest in various ways, such as a protagonist who is genuinely incompetent or a villain who is motivated by understandable, even sympathetic, reasons. The effect of an antitrope is often to create surprise, humor, or a more complex and nuanced viewing or reading experience.

For example, a common trope is the "chosen one" who is destined for greatness. An antitrope of this would be a character who is mistakenly believed to be the chosen one, or who actively rejects their supposed destiny. Another example is the trope of the damsel in distress; an antitrope would feature a character who is placed in a dangerous situation but is entirely capable of rescuing themselves, or even rescuing their supposed rescuer. Antitropes can also apply to plot structures, such as a story that appears to be building towards a grand climax, only to end anticlimactically or with an unexpected resolution.

The effectiveness of antitropes relies on the audience's familiarity with the tropes they are subverting. Without an understanding of the expected pattern, the inversion may go unnoticed or fail to have the desired impact. They are a tool used by creators to challenge conventional storytelling and to engage the audience on a deeper, more analytical level.
