Antiplättningsbehandling, which translates to anti-platelet treatment in English, refers to medical interventions aimed at preventing the formation of blood clots, or thrombi, within blood vessels. This is achieved by inhibiting the function of platelets, small cell fragments in the blood that play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. When platelets aggregate excessively or inappropriately, they can lead to the formation of dangerous clots.

The primary goal of antiplatelet therapy is to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks (myocardial infarction) and strokes (cerebrovascular accidents). These events often occur when a blood clot blocks an artery supplying the heart or brain, respectively. Antiplatelet drugs work by interfering with different pathways involved in platelet activation and aggregation.

Commonly prescribed antiplatelet medications include aspirin, which inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) thereby reducing the production of thromboxane A2, a potent platelet activator. Other drugs, such as clopidogrel, prasugrel, and ticagrelor, belong to the class of P2Y12 inhibitors. These medications block the binding of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to its receptor on the platelet surface, which is another key step in platelet activation.

Antiplatelet treatment is often prescribed for individuals with established cardiovascular disease, such as those who have had a heart attack or stroke, or who have undergone procedures like angioplasty with stenting. It is also used prophylactically in certain high-risk individuals. The choice of medication, dosage, and duration of treatment is determined by a healthcare professional based on the individual's specific medical condition and risk factors.
