However, it is generally considered in relation to other terms describing fortified settlements, such as "muinaislinnat" or "muinaislinnat," which are often translated as "ancient castles" or "medieval castles," but can also refer to other types of fortified settlements.

Archaeological excavations have confirmed the presence of antikauttavien in Finland dating back to the Late Iron Age, around the 13th to 16th centuries. These structures were often constructed using earthworks and wooden palisades. Some antikauttavien featured stone-based construction, with examples found in the southwestern region of Finland and in islands of the Åland Sea.

Excavations have also revealed significant similarities among the antikauttavien. Many have designated areas for storage and food preparation. Some structures may have been built in response to external threats, while others show signs of internal conflicts or social hierarchies. While some antikauttavien show characteristics similar to those of medieval castles or fortresses, they were generally not built with the fortifications and moats typically associated with these structures.
