The term antiintegral is not a standard mathematical noun and does not appear in most reference works under that precise spelling. In informal contexts it is occasionally used as a synonym for an antiderivative, that is, the function whose derivative yields the integrand. The more common and accepted terminology for this operation is the indefinite integral or antiderivative itself. When used in this sense, an antiintegral of a function f(x) is any function F(x) such that F′(x)=f(x), together with the arbitrary additive constant.

The confusion surrounding the word stems partly from the fact that integral, differential, and derivative are connected by the fundamental theorem of calculus, and the reverse of integration is differentiation. However, the formal concept of an “anti‑integral” is not defined in the calculus textbooks, which prefer to speak of antiderivatives, primitives, or antiderivatives functions. Some older or more colloquial texts in the early 20th century might refer to an antiintegral in this way, but the usage has fallen out of favor.

In other disciplines the word antiintegral could be used metaphorically. For example, in integrative medicine one might speak of “anti‑integrals” to highlight approaches that oppose holistic integration, although there is no standardized definition. As a result, references to antiintegral are usually found in footnotes or as a passing remark, rather than as a defined area of study.

Because of its ambiguity, any scholarly work that employs the term may clarify its meaning in a definition or footnote. If the writer wishes to communicate the idea of the antiderivative, the safe and widely understood choice is to use the terms antiderivative, primitive, or integral with an additive constant. The term antiintegral is therefore considered informal and non‑technical in contemporary mathematical literature.
