Antidandruff refers to products, typically shampoos, designed to treat dandruff. Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells, resulting in visible flakes. While the exact cause is not always clear, it is often associated with factors like dry skin, oily skin (seborrheic dermatitis), fungal overgrowth (Malassezia), and sensitivity to hair products.

Antidandruff shampoos work by using active ingredients that target the causes of dandruff. Common active ingredients include zinc pyrithione and selenium sulfide, which have antifungal and antibacterial properties to reduce the Malassezia yeast. Ketoconazole is another potent antifungal ingredient. Salicylic acid is used to help loosen and exfoliate the dead skin cells, making them easier to wash away. Coal tar and its derivatives work by slowing down skin cell turnover.

When using antidandruff products, it is often recommended to lather the shampoo and leave it on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing to allow the active ingredients to work effectively. For mild cases, using an antidandruff shampoo a few times a week may be sufficient. For more persistent dandruff, daily use or alternating with a regular shampoo might be advised. If symptoms do not improve or worsen, consulting a dermatologist is recommended to rule out other scalp conditions and receive appropriate treatment.
