Anticalcáreos, also known as limescale removers or descalers, are chemical or physical agents designed to eliminate or prevent the buildup of limescale. Limescale is a hard, chalky deposit primarily composed of calcium carbonate, which forms when hard water evaporates. This deposit commonly accumulates in pipes, water heaters, kettles, coffee makers, and on bathroom fixtures like showerheads and tiles.

Chemical anticalcáreos typically work by dissolving the calcium carbonate. Common active ingredients include acids such as citric acid, hydrochloric acid, or sulfamic acid. These acids react with the calcium carbonate, breaking it down into soluble salts that can be washed away. The strength of the acid and the concentration used will determine the effectiveness and speed of the descaling process. Safety precautions are important when using acidic descalers, as they can be corrosive.

Physical anticalcáreos operate differently. These can include magnetic or electronic devices that are installed in plumbing systems. The theory behind magnetic descalers is that they alter the structure of the mineral ions in the water, making them less likely to adhere to surfaces and form scale. Electronic descalers use electrical impulses for a similar purpose. While these methods are often promoted as maintenance-free alternatives to chemical descalers, their effectiveness is a subject of ongoing scientific debate and research. Ion exchange water softeners, which remove calcium and magnesium ions from the water altogether, are another effective method for preventing limescale formation.
